Heber City – You can learn how to fish through the ice, eat a hotdog or two and maybe win a prize at a free ice fishing clinic on Jan. 26.

The clinic will be held at Strawberry Reservoir from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Adam Eakle, host of KSL television's "Outdoors with Adam Eakle" show, has teamed with several partners, including the Division of Wildlife Resources and Strawberry Bay Marina, to host the free event.

"This event will be a fun way to learn how to ice fish," says Scott Root, regional conservation outreach manager for the DWR.

One of the best trout fishing waters in the country, Strawberry Reservoir is just off U.S. Highway 40, about 20 miles southeast of Heber City.

Fun event

Root says volunteers will be available to help you learn the techniques of ice fishing. The volunteers will also drills holes in the ice for you.

"Joe Donnell from Utah State Parks will demonstrate how to rescue someone who has fallen through the ice," Root says. "Other demonstrations, including one about ice fishing tackle, will be presented throughout the day."

Employees from KSL television will also be on hand, cooking hotdogs, providing hot chocolate and giving out prizes.

To prepare for the event, wear waterproof boots and dress for cold weather. You're also encouraged to visit this page on the DWR's website -- http://go.usa.gov/4gWw -- to learn more about the basic type of gear you should bring with you.

Root says plenty of free parking will be available at the Strawberry Bay Marina. The marina is six miles off of U.S. 40 at the turnoff near the Strawberry Reservoir visitor center. (Signs at the turnoff will direct you to the marina.)

"Ice fishing is growing in popularity," says Paul Phillips of the Strawberry Bay Marina. "There's a lot of excitement about it, especially at Strawberry Reservoir. We're thrilled to be part of this event."

Phillips says several portable heaters will be available on the ice. You can also warm up at the marina's restaurant and its lodge.
